Letter to media 16/02/2017

Here's a letter to the editor, published on 16 February 2017 ... I am outraged by the behaviour at Onkaparinga Council with the highly paid CEO being paid almost $7000 for golf club membership (The Advertiser, yesterday). It was total stupidity for the Council's elected members to approve this in secret and then keep it secret. Residents in Onkaparinga missed out on $7000 being spent in their streets.

Sun dried figs

What a glorious time of the year - despite the heat, the humidity and the rain. The hot summer has ripened the figs and the rainbow lorikeets are having a glorious time in the fig tree. I don't net the tree, preferring to share with the birds. The rain has ruined the recent ripe figs; so maybe I will be lucky with the next batch in a couple of weeks. But those figs that fall to the ground and get sun dried on the hot brick path are glorious. They dry quickly and are quite chewy. There's nothing quite like: Lying on the lawn, on your back with your legs in the air whilst chewing on a fig; Lying on the brick paving and sucking on a fig; Lying in bed and savouring a sun dried fig; Leaving a chewed fig on the kitchen floor knowing that someone will step on it (or inspect it closely before picking it up) It's a dog's delight collecting sun dried figs and chewing on them. My dog delights in this delicacy.

Its amazing the apps now available on smart phones and devices. Now there is one that gives reliability to the rhythm method of contraception. A new mobile app for monitoring body temperature to track a woman’s menstrual cycle has been extensively trialed and now has been certified as a medical device for contraception by a German regulator.  The Natural Cycles app records daily temperature and uses an algorithm to plot fertility on an in-app calendar. The app was part of a clinical study in 2016 of one million women and it is claimed that it could be as effective as the contraceptive pill. The German certification body TÃœV SÃœD has approved Natural Cycles as a Class IIb medical device. The app developer now claims that the software is the first of its kind to be certified as a contraception alongside condoms, the pill and intra-uterine devices (IUDs). It is stated that ... “Our high quality clinical studies, together with the required regulatory approvals, means we c

Media report, misconduct @ Unley

The issue of Unley Councillor Michael Hewitson and his breach of confidentiality has growing interest in the community. It is unfortunate in that it turns the media spotlight on Unley for all the wrong reasons. From recollection, this is the most serious incident of misconduct @ Unley Council. It is the first incident that dealt with misconduct in public administration within the meaning of the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) Act. Here's a link to the media report photo of Michael Hewitson (source: EC Messenger)

e-Strategy @ Unley

Unley Council is highly proactive in its Environmental Strategy. We made a huge effort in creating the strategy; and now it is paying a dividend; in real and practical ways. To highlight Council's achievement, five 2 minute videos have been produced. They are excellent snapshots of Council's Environmental Strategy. View the videos
