CYCLISTS WANTED to volunteer for an experiment. The University of SA will conduct a study to evaluate the effects of dried fruit & nuts on exercise performance & recovery. All food will be provided; just dried fruit & nuts. You will get $200 upon completion of the study. For some reason the study is only for males. Why ? ( Let me know if you find out .) Sounds like a worthwhile study, so give it consideration. Stop hiccups

The most interesting news in the paper yesterday ... how to stop hiccups. Research has shown the cause of hiccups to be eating or drinking too much and too quickly. Supposedly the stomach distends which irritates the diaphragm. It has been suggested that to stop the hiccups, eat a spoonful of creamy peanut paste very slowly. It's worth a try; provided you have a jar of peanut paste at hand. Caution (mine): not recommended if you are allergic to peanuts.

Its amazing the apps now available on smart phones and devices. Now there is one that gives reliability to the rhythm method of contraception. A new mobile app for monitoring body temperature to track a woman’s menstrual cycle has been extensively trialed and now has been certified as a medical device for contraception by a German regulator.  The Natural Cycles app records daily temperature and uses an algorithm to plot fertility on an in-app calendar. The app was part of a clinical study in 2016 of one million women and it is claimed that it could be as effective as the contraceptive pill. The German certification body TÜV SÜD has approved Natural Cycles as a Class IIb medical device. The app developer now claims that the software is the first of its kind to be certified as a contraception alongside condoms, the pill and intra-uterine devices (IUDs). It is stated that ... “Our high quality clinical studies, together with the required regulatory approva...

Busted by Krispy Kremes

Don't eat Krispy Kremes! They taste so wonderful, but they are almost 100% sugar; just totally bad for you. They're not a real donut; just a huge sugar hit. They're so bad, you can get busted by the cops for eating them. Read the story ...

Nip and a tuck

Last week I had what I shall describe as minor surgery on my tummy. A bit of a nip and a tuck. Sore for two days and now bearable; rapidly improving. It is amazing how the stomach muscles are used when you do other things like ... blowing your nose, coughing ... Tip: hold the tummy with one hand and then blow your nose ;) I know that it is not on the same scale, but I now have some idea of the after effects of a cesarean birth.

Easter chocolate

Easter is a special celebration. For some it is more spiritual. For all (I suspect) it means giving, receiving and eating chocolate. The downside is the calories we pile on. Here are some sad statistics. One Cadbury Mini Easter Egg (3.3g) is 16 calories, so ten of these are 160 calories. Below is a chart of activities showing how long it takes to burn off 10 mini Easter Eggs. Activity                                        Men*            Women** Running (15 km/hr)                      7.5 minutes  10 minutes Cycling (less than 16.1 km/hr)     30 minutes   40 minutes Walking (4.82 km/hr)                   37 minutes   47 minutes *   Based on an average male, 175.6 cm and 85.9 kg ** Based on an average fe...

uBUG = Unley Bicycle User Group

At the February 2015 Council meeting, Unley endorsed the creation of a local bicycle user group (UBUG). I am enthusiastic about the feedback this group will provide to Council. Cycling is a growing mode of transport and we need to promote it. Unley Council will assist the group in its formation and provide meeting venues. UBUG will be a residents' user group and govern itself without any Council presence or intervention. UBUG will provide feedback on cycle routes and their condition and assist in promoting health and the social benefits of cycling. Time will tell in the merit of assisting in the formation of UBUG. I think it will pay off. The first meeting is scheduled for Tuesday  21 April 2015 at the Unley Community Centre, 18 Arthur Street, Unley at 6.00 pm If you are interested in participating then here are the contact details: Email pobox1@unley.sa.gov.au or Phone Council on 8372 5111 and feel free to email me via bschnell@unley.sa.gov.a...

Itchy iPad

If you have an unexplained rash or itch, then it may be due to use of a mobile device, in particular the iPad. Mobile devices contain nickel and that can irritate the skin. It is thought that the contact is from a surface coating that contains nickel. It is not life threatening, but it can be uncomfortable. There have been recent reports in medical journals regarding nickel allergies from personal electronic devices, Here’s a link to the story.

Toxic Keswick

I was annoyed, very annoyed to learn that contaminated ground water had been found in Ashford, Keswick and Forestville. The EPA is continuing to sample the water and soil vapours. According to a press report, authorities have known about the contamination for years. If that is the case, then why the delay in alerting residents? The State Government will hold community meetings with residents. It is a sad legacy from heavy industrial pollution from past years.

Flu Tracking survey

Image
Each year I get a flu shot, just in case. It won’t stop the man colds, but it will probably save you from the life threatening big one. It’s your choice, but it does make sense. For the past few years I have participated in an online FluTracking survey. I get a weekly email asking if I have had a cough or a fever. The survey only takes 10 seconds to complete. Consider subscribing and assist with the monitoring of influenza. Here is  a link. More information from the website … FluTracking is an online health surveillance system to detect epidemics of influenza. We are looking for people who live in Australia and have easy access to email on a weekly basis. It doesn't matter if you are vaccinated or unvaccinated. It takes only 10 - 15 seconds each week. We ask if you have had fever or cough in the last week. This will help us find ways to detect both seasonal influenza and hopefully pandemic influenza and other diseases so we can better protect the community from epidemic...
