The highlight is looking for love ❤️ via speed dating on the Ferris Wheel 🎡 A novel idea. The Ferris Wheel has always been popular with couples; the spin just injects romance. Fantastic news that harness racing is returning to Wayville @ The Showgrounds. Years ago, many years ago, harness racing was hugely popular at Wayville. It drew crowds of 10,000s. The last trots race at Wayville was held in 1973. Wayville was the trots venue from 1925 to 1973. There will be 8 races over the year. The first event is on Friday 27 October. Put it in your calendar and get there. The first event will be a nostalgic return to the glory days of harness racing from yester-year. I am forecasting a huge crowd for the first race. Fantastic news … the pedestrian/cycle path under Anzac Highway is now open. Now, that path on the edge of the Showground will continue under Anzac Highway and continue into the CBD. Underpass links cycling paths The underpass beneath Anzac Highway and Greenhill Road has been officially opened, providing uninterrupted access to and from the city for cyclists and walkers. Minister for Transport, Stephen Mullighan said the final major piece of the Marino Rocks Greenway - the $2 million Keswick Path - was an important link that connected existing paths on either side of the busy intersection. "Keeping cyclists away from the intersection will provide a much safer option for them - and they will save time too," the Minister said. The new train station at the edge of the Showgrounds came alive to the sounds of farm animals last week. The temporary ticket validators at the station were programmed to make cow, chicken and sheep noises when passengers validated their Metrocards. The assessment is that the innovation was well received by the passengers – it brought a smile to many faces. I would have added the sounds of dogs and horses. Maybe next year ...

The Show is alive in Goodwood and Wayville. There’s a huge background buzz. I live a kilometre away and I can hear the noise – screams, rides, cars on the track and the nightly fireworks. The local area has been transformed by the huge influx of people. Cars are heavily parked in nearby streets. Next year we must extend the limited time parking zones to help the residents. The trams and trains are chockers with people travelling to the Show. It is interesting to observe those who go to the Show. You get all types, each with different expectations. Some go just for the rides; others go to inspect the livestock and poultry; others go to see … there’s a huge range of what to see. If you’re thinking of getting a dog or cat (or budgerigar) it’s an ideal time to check out breeds and colours and talk with breeders. Recently I noticed a huge truck with a huge trailer carrying excavated soil from the former Annesley College site. It exited Bartley Crescent the wrong way out onto Greenhill Road. (Bartley Crescent is one way.) In doing so it mounted the footpath. Lucky no one was entering Bartley Cresent from Greenhill Road. Since then I have received a call from a resident about another truck making the same exit. I reported this matter to Council Administration who then held urgent talks with Resthaven (the site owner) and Badge (the site developer). Assurances have been given that it won’t happen again. If you do observe a similar incident then report it to the Police and also let me know. Provide as much detail as you can: day, time, rego … This development will be ongoing for 9-12 months and we need to ensure that there is minimal disruption to the local Wayville community.

Now that site works are under way, residents have approached me to ask what is happening on the former Annesley College site. Annesley College was located on the corner between Rose Terrace, Bartley Crescent and Greenhill Road @ Wayville. Here are some notes on the development: Applicant is Resthaven. The construction of an office complex, part two and part three storeys. A total floor area of 2691 square metres. A two way internal driveway, with provides access and egress from Bartley Crescent and Greenhill Road. A basement comprising 58 car parks with a 6m wide ramp parallel to Bartley Crescent, 16 bicycle parks, a lift, stairs access and a rainwater tank. 40 car parks at grade plus 4 bicycle parks. Landscaping for the whole site. There will be plant rooms on top of the building. A 1.1m high fence along Bartley Crescent and Rose Terrace. Buffer zone along Rose Terrace. As a local Councillor I've had a few interesting requests for assistance from residents in Wayville, Goodwood, Forestville and Everard Park. Last weekend I was contacted by a local who I'll call John. I visited John and heard his story. His neighbour was doing what many people do viz. collecting snails from the backyard. Usually they squash them or dispose of the snails by some other means. Instead, the neighbour was tossing the snails over the the side fence and onto John's manicured lawn. John wanted me to do something about it. He wanted the Council to intervene or perhaps get the Mayor onto the case. I explained that it was a civil matter and neither the Council nor the Mayor would be able to assist. I recommended 3 courses of action: 1. Talk to the neighbour about the matter. No, he wouldn't do that. 2. Buy a couple of ducks to free range in his yard. Ducks love snails. No, he didn't want any ducks. He didn't want duck poo everywhere. 3. I had l...

I have decided to run again as a Councillor for Goodwood Ward in the City of Unley Council elections to be held in Oct-Nov 2014. With the elections approaching, I thought I should declare now whether or not I was running. I noticed in the media today that there is a statement that I issued. The media comment was … UNLEY councillor Bob Schnell will re-run in Goodwood ward against high-profile candidate Gill Hicks in the November council elections. "I am encouraged by support given to me by residents in Wayville, Goodwood, Forestville and Everard Park," Cr Schnell said. It’s amazing how the media has presented the news as me running against Gill Hicks. Isn’t it the other way around? The reality is that come the election all candidates will running against the others. In Goodwood Ward (and all other wards across Unley) there are 2 positions of Councillor. This week I met with Council staff to review the temporary parking restrictions to be installed for 10 days during the Royal Show. These restrictions happen every year. Soon, a letter with one free parking permit will be posted to every household in the affected area ... in Wayville, Goodwood and Forestville. Residents will be invited to request additional free permits if required. Last year I noticed that due to heavy parking in Goodwood near the shops, local businesses were severely impacted. Residents were unable to park and shopped elsewhere. Businesses were adversely impacted. Consequently, I asked the Council staff to extend the parking restrictions (of 1-2 hours) further south in the side streets (on the eastern side of Goodwood Road) to enable locals to park and shop. The free permits help to make life a bit easier during the hectic Show period. Council makes a huge effort to control parking in the area. Remember that this year the Show runs for an extra day.

The State Government presented to an Unley Council workshop the final design for the reconstruction of the median strip along Greenhill Road. This will impact and limit access to/from Clark and Joslin Streets in Wayville. This design is what was suggested by the residents at the first community workshop. At the session I attended there was a majority agreement. The solution is a compromise. What will be allowed is: @ Clark, right turn out @ Joslin, right turn in Can Unley Council in any way influence this proposal? No! Construction will commence after the Royal Show.
