As a retail consultant, I shouldn't have been surprised (or caught). I went to First Choice @ Unley. Simply because I had a flybys voucher: spend $40 and get 1,000 flybuys. I bought absolute essentials, what I needed, no extras and had goods to the value of $43. At the checkout I was offered a choice of one of 3 products for just $10. The options were a six pack of Heineken beer, a dubious bottle of red wine or a bottle of Land of Giants, NZ Marlborough, Sauvignon Blanc, 2015. Given the hot weather, I selected the white wine, but was suspicious because it was last year's, 2015; a bad sign. I opened the bottle tonight; we had fish for dinner. Basically it was a $10 bottle of wine at a cost of $10. I was hoping that it would taste like a $13 bottle. It wasn't anything special. The other day I went to buy a new iron, you know the type used to press shirts and trousers etc. When finalising the sale I was asked if I wanted to buy extended warranty. I said no. It's all a scam and you rarely get any real value for this 'extra protection'. It was a modest amount for the iron, but it can be a huge extra amount when buying a higher priced TV or a car. The salesperson pushes you hard, because they (and their company) get a cut on the sale ie. they get a commission. Avoid the temptation and don't get sucked in; it doesn't make economic sense. They are still talking about running the new tram line down Goodwood Road, rather than along Unley Road. It simply won't fit. It would be an obstacle for cars and severely reduce the volume of traffic, especially during peak hour. From my perspective that would be great; reduced commuter traffic in the Goodwood shopping zone. Much of the traffic would be diverted to King William Road and Unley Road; good for Goodwood 😀 It would be a real engineering feat to get the tram down through the underpass with poles inserted into the crumbling walls of the underpass. At the recent Unley Council meeting (June 2016) there was healthy debate about the merit of underground trams (in a tunnel) under Unley Road; from Greenhill Road to Cross Road, a distance of ~ 2km. Mayor Lachlan Clyne had publicly proposed consideration of underground trams. Unley Council responded with a motion on notice that sought to publicly disassociate itself from the Mayor's proposal. It was a healthy debate. My argument against the proposal was as follows: My costings, formulated by assistance from civil engineers, forecast a cost of $1.5b. That cost may blow out to $2b within 5 years. The new Sundrop solar powered salt water tomato farm at Port Augusta costs $180m. At that price we could build another 5-8 Sundrop tomato farms. The proposed solar powered and thermal storage power station at Port Augusta will cost $1.2b. We could build another one and have $300m left over. This milk issue is outrageous. The hard working dairy farmers are getting screwed by the supermarkets who promote their own brand milk which is bought at dirt cheap cost from the farmers. This only happens because consumers buy the cheap milk at $1 a litre. We must all take a stand and stop buying unbranded milk. Only buy branded milk. This will ensure that dairy farmers get a better deal. At your work place see what milk your company buys for your morning tea cuppa. If it is an own brand from the supermarket then talk to the boss; make a representation to management. When you go to a coffee shop, ask the barista which brand milk they use. If it is unbranded then ask them to change or switch to another more ethical barista. Make a stand. If we drive our dairy farmers into the ground it will encourage foreign buyers to buy up more of our agricultural land. For a gift that is out of this world why not consider a parcel of land on Mars. The online advertisement says ... Just $19 for 1 acre of land on Mars. Over 1,000 sold already, or so they say. The fine print says a novel gift for entertainment purposes only. In other words you get nothing other than a useless deed and some freely available information about space travel from NASA. You have to feel sorry for the women. They do like to shop and snap up the bargains and buy nice things. Now we find that quite often they’re being conned and paying what’s called a Pink Tax; it’s really an inflated price for an item specifically targeted at females. Take the case of under-arm deodorant. There really is no reason why women can’t use a product labelled for Men. Deodorant is just deodorant. But they don’t and instead buy a very similar product labelled for Women. Quite often the inflated price difference is huge. Women using Men’s deodorant could always add a spray or dab of perfume to change the scent of the deodorant. This price difference is the Pink Tax. Here's a link for more information
