It's something that I've suspected for a long time. Now, it has been proved; that rainwater stored in tanks is unfit for drinking. Researchers at Flinders University have found that more than 50% of tank water tested contains the dangerous E. coli bacteria. E. coli causes vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach cramps. Nasty. Yes I have rainwater tanks, but I only use the water for the garden. I would even consider it for drinking. Just think about all the bird and possum and rat poo that gets washed into the tank! #Unley

Dogs just love nuts as a treat, but we should be saying No, no nuts. It seems that there are only 2 nuts that should be given to dogs. Peanuts and roasted cashews. Hazelnuts are ok, but they do pose a choking risk. So for your dog's health, just stick to peanuts for an occasional treat; besides they're the cheapest. Read more ...

Not bad for a Welsh farmer who has created the world's hottest chilli. He wasn't even trying; rather he was trying to enhance the shape of the chilli bush and foliage to make it more attract. Now he is the record holder for creating the hottest chilli in the world. The chilli has been named Dragon's Breath. Eating it would most likely kill you by literally burning your airway; just like breathing fire. The Scoville scale is used to measure the intensity of chilli heat in units. The Dragon's Breath measures 2.48 million Scoville heat units (SHU). That means that one drop of oil from this chilli can be detected in 2.48 million drops of water. There's nothing more irritating that spraying the legs and arms with mozzie repellent and after a few hours getting bitten. It takes the fun out of the outdoors activity. Mozzie expert, entomologist Dr Cameron Webb has released his Australian research. He points out that some repellents are more effective than others. The most effective contain the chemicals diethyltoluamide or picaridin . These provide the longest protection. The least effective contain plant extracts like citronella or tea tee oil. These need to be applied more frequently. Also, his research shows that mosquitoes are attracted to people drinking beer or wearing sweet floral perfume. This probably accounts for why beer drinking women seem to get bitten more.

Wildlife Hospital The other night I found a young  rainbow lorikeet by the road side. It was not looking too good and had ants on it. I took it home and placed it in a small cage that I keep in the shed; for such emergencies. I was sure the bird would die that night. The next morning there was renewed life, but it still looked crook. So I took it to the Adelaide Koala & Wildlife Hospital @  282 Anzac Highway , Plympton. They provide a free service to native birds and animals. It is next door to a Vet who provides assistance.
