Many items people bring along to the household hazardous waste drop-off day don’t really need to be handled by chemical experts as they are of a less hazardous nature. You can avoid lining up at the hazardous waste drop-off day by using one of the following options.

Batteries
Most batteries can be recycled.
Batteries can be dropped off at:
  • City of Unley depot, 75 King William Road, Unley
  • Battery World Melrose, 167 Edward Street, Melrose Park
  • Battery World Hilton, 86 Sir Donald Bradman Drive, Hilton.
Car and truck batteries, non ferrous metals
  • The Edmonds Group, 389 Osmond Road, Glen Osmond. (The Edmonds Group will pay 10 cents per kilo for your car battery).
  • Note: Residential quantities only, commercial quantities will not be accepted.
Fluorescent light globes
A wide range of globes, bulbs, lights and fluorescent tubes can now be recycled.
Drop off your end-of–life globes or tubes at any Mitre 10, Banner or Tru-Value hardware store.
  • Blackwood True Value Hardware, 235 Main Road, Blackwood
  • Malvern Mitre 10, 321 Unley Road, Malvern
  • Mitre 10 Glenunga, 499 Portrush Road, Glenunga
  • City of Unley depot, 75 King William Road, Unley
  • Note: Residential quantities only, commercial quantities will not be accepted.
Gas Cylinders
Gas cylinders can be disposed of at:
  • Adelaide Waste and Recycling Centre 181 Morphett Road, North Plympton
  • Metro Waste Services, 19-25 Murray Street, Thebarton.
Oil
Oil is a valuable resource that can be recycled. Used motor oil can be brought to the following facilities free of charge:
  • City of Unley depot, 75 King William Road, Unley
  • Adelaide Waste and Recycling Centre 181 Morphett Road, North Plympton

Bring your oil in a clean, plastic container with a lid. The original container is perfect.
Avoid using paint cans or other metal containers.
Both oil and container will be recycled.
Paint
Householders can bring up to 20 litres of paint to the collection; however, hardened paint and empty paint tins will not be accepted.
Dry paint is perfectly safe to dispose of in your waste bin.
You can harden paint at home by simply leaving the lid off or by adding a paint hardener purchased from a hardware store. Tap the hardened tablet of paint out of the tin and place in the waste bin. Empty, dry paint tins can be recycled in the yellow recycling bin.
